Playstation 4: A Rediscovery

Trying to get value from a PS4 that’s been largely ignored this past year…

I had had the PS4 hooked up to the same monitor I use as my primary monitor for my PC, (so it was sat on my PC desk with my PC), but for the past year it’s largely lay ignored because if I’m sat at the PC, I’ll generally be on the PC.

So at the weekend I made the decision to move the PS4 away from the PC desk altogether, and moved it into the living room, and since doing that I’ve played more of the PS4 in those 3 days than I have in the past year…

I’ve been getting re-acquainted with a game I’ve wanted to get finished for a long time now: Horizon Zero Dawn.

Booting it up and checking the date of the last save file revealed I hadn’t played this gem in nearly 2 years!

I knew it had been a while, but I would never have guessed it was nearing the 2 year anniversary of my last picking it up…

So I’ve been getting back into HZD, and I have a pile of games on my PS4 back catalogue:

  • Last of Us: Remastered
  • Uncharted: 2, 3 & 4
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Spiderman
  • God of War
  • God of War 3 Remastered
  • Bloodborne
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Nioh
  • Assassin’s Creed: Origins
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Heavy Rain
  • Beyond: Two Souls
  • Infamous: Second Son & First Light
  • Wipeout: Omega Collection

And that’s just a sample of my back catalogue…

As for Steam, well, let’s just say that particular collection is building very nicely. Sitting at well over 900 games on there, only a few dozen of which (at best) is actually finished.

Playing World of Warcraft over the past 11 years has been a joy, and it has become enshrined as one of my favourite games of all time, and I wouldn’t change a thing about that.

However that obsession/addiction/love has led to the abandonment of one of the best consoles ever created as well as an increasingly huge mountain of Steam games.

Future Plans?

So over the next several months, between now and Shadowlands, I’m going to try my damndest to finish off as many PS4 games at least. At least before the PS5 gets released in about 8 months anyway.

Not that I’d buy the PS5/PS5 Pro right away, I’d leave it a year until there’s a good catalogue of PS5 exclusives I want to play before making the move. I held off buying a PS4 for years for the same reason.

Then again if Coronavirus gets us all I’ll have plenty of time alone at home to finish off all of them!
